The challenge

John Bell & Croyden is undoubtedly the most prestigious pharmacy in the world – and official pharmacist to the British royal family since 1909. John Bell & Croyden’s history can be traced as far back as 1798, when John Bell opened his first pharmacy in Oxford Street, London. In 1928 the company was acquired by Savory & Moore, and then in 1993 by the Lloyds Pharmacy chain, which is part of Celesio Group, one of the leading service providers for the wholesale and retail trades in health care.

In collaboration with ITAB Nässjö, Sweden, we were tasked by Celesio to come up with a lighting solution that reflected the store’s royal heritage and architecture, but at the same time create a new, inviting environment which differed from the other pharmacies on the high street. In effect, we were tasked with designing a real attraction and destination shopping venue.

The solution

Our challenge was to design, manufacture and supply a lighting solution that was both prestigious and unique, while it reflected the historic environment, exclusive products and the building’s traditional architecture.
To achieve the desired visual environment, we manufactured tailored brass lamps, 1,000 mm in diameter, which would really match the store’s royal character and enhance the store experience. As a complement to the 1950’s industrial-style pendants, we used Nordic Light’s accent lighting to give due prominence to the products.

The result

We created a lighting concept and a solution that truly live up to the challenging brief, and that deliver a striking but comfortable lighting environment with genuine character. John Bell & Croyden is now a vibrant and stylish store that reflects and enhances both the unique building, and the venerable company’s traditions. But in a new, more contemporary look.

We delivered not only a light concept. In close cooperation between several ITAB companies, we were responsible for all technical design work and new shop fittings, store fixtures and equipment.
