In mid-August 2020, a new grocery store was opened in Braunschweig, Germany. 3.800 m² of first-class quality with focus on regionally produced goods.

ITAB had the opportunity to design both the Checkout area and the overall lighting concept for the customer.

When it comes to the checkout area it is important to consider not only the sort of checkouts but also efficiency, customer flow, placing, space, guidance, merchandising, combined with, in this case, a high visual demand.

After analysing the expected consumer flow, a combination of both conventional checkouts and self-checkouts was the best option to deliver on the wanted outcome. Consumer flow can help in increasing revenue. When a natural consumer journey is created you increase the possibility that more products will be added to their basket, increasing the average number of articles per purchase.

To limit the access to easily accessible goods near the self-checkouts, it is important to prevent backflow into the store. Automatic gates were used that can both work as a mental barrier and make consumers feel safe.

Lighting

The lighting presentation of food is one of the most demanding tasks in lighting design. The attractive and sales-promoting presentation is always in the foreground. General lighting brings seamless and homogenous lighting in the aisles and optimally illuminate the shelves.  The additional combination of spotlights with different colour temperatures and beam angles helps presenting areas like meat, fish, organic, fruit & vegetables in the best way. Glare-free fixtures are used in the checkout arena. And special areas are highlighted by decorative lighting from our network of partners to provide the perfect visual effect.

The customers attention was fully focussed on the products. The perfect and optimum lighting emphasises the quality of food and maintains it at the same time.

The lighting concept brings cohesion throughout the store while presenting highlights and special areas that spice up the journey, ending in a perfectly integrated checkout arena where every single detail has been carefully chosen.

The consumers are happy to come back and the retail customer shows great interested in cooperating with us again.
