Eco-store concept for Rossmann

Where sustainability meets premium retail.

In collaboration with Rossmann, ITAB created a 405 m² flagship store in the Avion Shopping Centre, Ostrava. The task was to develop and design a sustainable, nature-inspired concept suitable for a premium location, while meeting the strictest design, safety, and landlord requirements.

Rossmann’s ambition was to develop a store concept that reflects its growing commitment to sustainability without compromising the brand’s premium image or customer experience. The high-traffic location in Ostrava demanded a strong visual presence, environmentally responsible yet durable materials, and a clear navigation system to set the store apart from its competitors. Safety standards and coordination with the landlord added to the complexity, requiring a solution that was both visually compelling and technically robust.

A concept that brings nature to life

Working closely with Rossmann, ITAB developed a concept that blended natural materials, digital innovation, and functional design. Weekly coordination meetings with the retailer, contractors, lighting specialists, and other stakeholders ensured rapid problem-solving, swift material approvals, and efficient adaptation of design details. Early-stage prototypes proved essential in balancing creative aspirations with technical feasibility and landlord expectations.

Solution Design

The final design featured furniture constructed from ecologically certified Egger laminate panels, a striking green moss wall that enhanced the store’s natural character while improving acoustics and air quality, and a discreetly integrated digital make-up test station. The lighting concept used ITAB Leo LED luminaires, achieving an efficiency of up to 150 lm/W while keeping energy use below 14 W/m².

Warm white lighting at 3000K was introduced in specific zones, such as the health food section, to create a welcoming and product-appropriate atmosphere. In the checkout area, a “Customer Radar” system was implemented to detect waiting customers at unmanned tills, automatically triggering an acoustic alert and enabling staff to respond quickly without constant supervision.

Premium sustainability – delivered on 405 m²

The result is a store that combines functionality, sustainability, and customer convenience. Despite frequent layout changes during the construction phase, the build was completed on schedule, with the shop fit-out itself taking only four days. The combination of natural aesthetics, recyclable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and clear navigation delivers a pleasant shopping experience with minimal environmental impact. Collaboration with local suppliers further reduced transport emissions.

Although the concept will not be rolled out as a standard format, it now serves as a benchmark and source of inspiration for Rossmann’s future projects, reinforcing the brand’s positioning as a sustainable premium retailer in the drugstore sector.

  • Inviting and natural atmosphere: The store’s nature-inspired design reflects Rossmann’s commitment to sustainability. Wood finishes, a moss wall, and warm lighting create a welcoming space that feels authentic, premium, and close to nature.
  • Durable, efficient, and low-maintenance: Robust, easy-to-clean furniture maintains a premium look through daily use. The layout supports efficient operations, and long-life LED lighting provides consistent brightness with minimal upkeep.
