Brew with a view

The Brero family partnered with the ITAB Solution Design team to create a dedicated space for serving drinks and providing catering, with a mission to revitalise the valley’s identity and actively support the mountain community. The goal was to seamlessly blend traditional local materials, such as wood and stone, with modern, eco-friendly alternatives, resulting in a space that respects its surroundings while embracing the future.

Pian della Mussa Brewery opens pub at 1,432 metres

The Pian della Mussa Brewery in Balme (Turin) has opened a new pub at 1,432 metres above sea level, offering a unique experience for beer and mountain enthusiasts. Set in the Lanzo valleys, the pub reflects an entrepreneurial vision that blends tradition, innovation, and a passion for organic products and energy efficiency.

Sixteen years ago, the Brero family took over the Pian della Mussa mineral water plant, establishing a company that combines nature, technology, and passion. The project expanded in 2017 with a brewery producing organic beer from high-altitude spring water, and has now culminated in the pub’s opening, serving as a hub for catering, culture, and socialising.

A collaborative design approach

The collaboration with ITAB Solution Design led to a meticulously planned layout that enhances the pub’s functionality and appeal. The flexible design allows the space to adapt to various events, from casual meetups to large gatherings, thus maximising its utility and attractiveness. Different zones cater to diverse needs, from socialising and dining to quiet relaxation, ensuring an inclusive environment that appeals to a broad audience.

Meticulous layout design

A meticulous study of the layout ensured that the space was divided in an attractive manner, creating various reception areas. The use of easily removable metal balustrades allows for rapid transformation of the spaces to meet changing needs.

The customer area is divided into zones with different functions and characteristics to cater to diverse needs: a bar area with stools, socialising areas with high tables, large circular tables suitable for groups or families, a lounge space for those seeking a more secluded environment (perhaps to read a book or work), intimate areas with faux leather-covered benches, classic tables for breakfast or lunch, and a raised “stage” area for events and concerts.

In front of the entrance and cash register, there is a space for selling typical local products and merchandising items, all integrated with a large outdoor space on a furnished lawn.

Thoughtful material selection

The thoughtful selection of materials, including recycled wood and natural stone, has significantly reduced the environmental impact while maintaining the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the pub. These sustainable choices not only preserve the region’s architectural heritage but also contribute to a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with the community’s environmental values.

Energy efficiency with modern comfort

Innovative energy solutions, such as a remote-controlled, energy-efficient fireplace and low-energy LED lighting, have been integrated to ensure comfort while minimising environmental impact. These features contribute to a cosy atmosphere that enhances the guest experience while demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability.

Celebrating Local Heritage

The pub’s interior design pays tribute to the rich history of Balme and the Lanzo Valleys. By restoring and displaying historical documents and photographs, the venue connects guests with the region’s cultural heritage. The use of eco-friendly materials, like recyclable Reboard for graphics, ensures that this homage is in line with modern sustainability practices.

This careful attention to design, material selection, and cultural integration has transformed the Pian della Mussa Brewery pub into a destination that offers more than just a drink—it provides an immersive experience that celebrates the best of mountain life. It has become a symbol of the area’s rebirth, attracting visitors who seek authenticity, sustainability, and a deep connection with nature.
