Future-ready checkout zone at Marktkauf Mehr

With a newly designed checkout area, Marktkauf Mehr in Hemer sets a new benchmark for modern grocery retailing.

The project features a unique combination of smart customer flow, efficient self-service options, and strategic impulse merchandising — all implemented in close collaboration between ITAB and independent retailer Christopher Mehr.

Marktkauf in Hemer opened following a complete refurbishment of a previously used retail property, transforming it into a future-oriented supermarket. With over 4,800 m² of sales space, more than 60,000 products, and around 140 employees, it stands among the largest grocery markets in the Märkischer Kreis region.

Christopher Mehr aimed to optimise the checkout experience for both staff and customers by combining operational efficiency with a high-quality store environment. The focus was on intuitive navigation, increased impulse sales potential, and security-conscious self-checkout management without creating friction for genuine shoppers.

Function, flow and sales synergy

ITAB designed and installed a 220 m² checkout zone featuring solutions from the Impuls family, including 2 standalone checkouts, 4 tandem units, and 6 self-checkout stations. LED lighting enhances orientation and reinforces the store’s modern visual identity.

Custom impulse shelving, developed with Ferrero, drives spontaneous purchases. Glass automatic gates at the entrance improve aesthetics and guide traffic, while AlphaGates with ScanMaster at the exit enable secure, seamless checkout and support loss prevention.

Retail Technology solutions

Delivering tangible value to the market, staff & shoppers

The redesigned checkout zone has already delivered positive results. Strategically placed impulse modules in both the staffed and self-checkout areas capitalize on waiting times, driving unplanned purchases. Clearly structured pathways and logical entry and exit flows contribute to a smooth, efficient customer journey.

The seamless integration of technology and a cohesive visual layout enhance navigation and the overall shopping experience. Clear customer flow, reduced queueing time, and improved operational efficiency have significantly boosted daily performance and revenue potential.

A memorable final touchpoint

The structured customer flow and visually appealing checkout zone ensure a strong final impression. Shoppers are intuitively guided by carefully designed pathways, enhancing their experience. The modern checkout area, with its integrated lighting and impulse-friendly product displays, creates a welcoming and engaging environment.

This area, through which all customers pass, is designed to be both functional and emotionally resonant. It enhances the store’s brand experience by ensuring a smooth and enjoyable transition from shopping to checkout, thereby boosting customer satisfaction and fostering loyalty.

  • Turning wait time into buying time: By placing impulse products at self-checkout and traditional lanes, ITAB unlocked the potential of this high-impact zone. Occupying less than 1% of store space, the checkout area can drive up to 5% of turnover by turning wait times into sales. Smart placement in self-service zones boosts basket size and revenue.
  • Streamlined throughput: Clear pathways, multiple checkout options, and self-checkouts reduce queues and improve flow, streamlining operations and enhancing customer convenience. Freed from routine tasks, staff can offer personalised support, boosting satisfaction and efficiency.
  • Self-service with impact: Six strategically placed self-checkout stations maintain high service levels during peak times while reducing staffing needs. This setup streamlines customer flow, cuts wait times, and enhances convenience—boosting both cost-efficiency and satisfaction.
