Utilising Solution Design for complete self-checkout satisfaction

Our Solution Design team researched and engaged stakeholders to anticipate consumer needs, prioritising efficiency and ergonomics.

This resulted in a streamlined checkout environment for ICA Maxi, Barkarbystaden, guided by consumer feedback and delivering increased capacity, reduced queuing, and enhanced workplace comfort.

Transforming ICA Maxi’s checkout experience

In response to Maxi Barkarbystaden’s quest for an optimal self-checkout design, ITAB embarked on a thorough Solution Design process. Collaborating closely with the store, the ITAB team aimed to create a secure, efficient, and staff and consumer-centric checkout zone that would seamlessly integrate with the store’s growth trajectory.

Situated in a vibrant and rapidly expanding area, the store faces the challenge of catering to diverse consumer needs and purchase patterns. To address this, ITAB conducted extensive research, exploring various self-checkout solutions and engaging stakeholders to understand their preferences and pain points. Through collaborative workshops with the customer, we delved into the intricacies of design, functionality, and IT integration, ensuring a bespoke solution tailored to the store’s requirements. In connection with the renovation, the company also rebuilt its entrance and pre-store. In the pre-store, they chose ITAB’s digital queuing system, which they have also chosen to use in their deli department.

Self-checkout solutions

Design evolution – from research to realisation

The design phase evolved from the initial research, culminating in an approved prototype and a commitment from the store to proceed with the checkout arena layout. Further research on efficiency and the in-store environment, including staff and consumer feedback, informed the final design. Workshops with the customer facilitated the development of an area that prioritised efficiency, aesthetics, and safety, aligned with clear KPIs, notably queue elimination.

Delivering Efficiency

Installation was meticulously planned to minimize disruption to store operations. ITAB oversaw the installation of security exit gates, self-checkout systems, screen walls, and a durable, easy-to-clean flooring solution. Collaboration with a project manager from the customer’s headquarters ensured seamless execution, enabling uninterrupted service to customers throughout the installation period.

The results were impressive: increased capacity, reduced queuing, and enhanced workplace comfort. The store now boasts a more inviting checkout environment, fostering positive feedback from customers and staff alike. With the mission accomplished, ITAB successfully delivered on its promise of efficient, customer-centric self-checkout solutions.
